GC United to Score Goals for Broadbeach United
Update: Gold Coast scored two goals against Wellington to net the club a cheque for $3,000 from the Hyundai A-League.
Local lad Chris Broadfoot will be hoping his teammates go on a goal scoring spree against Wellington Phoenix this Saturday (December 11) at Skilled Park, when Miron's mighty men have the chance to collect funds for his former junior club.
Although likely to be sidelined due to a knee injury, Broadfoot will be hoping United can derail the fifth-placed Phoenix outfit by continuing the firepower form that saw them devour Melbourne Heart last Wednesday, and secure a maximum amount of $5,000 for Broadbeach United Soccer Club in the process.
Drafted in from the local Gold Coast competition where he represented the region and state, Broadfoot said knowing his former club could benefit from his team's performance certainly added fire in the belly.
“It's an excellent opportunity to give back to my former club and I will be spreading the word this week throughout the camp to rev the boys up ahead of the match,” the stunning striker said.
“Junior clubs are the backbone of the national football framework and it's important we implement programs to help assist in as many ways possible.
“It's often hard for clubs and programs at the grassroots level to survive with limited funds, so as a player who has progressed through the local ranks I think it's extremely important we help develop football within local communities through initiatives like this.”
The donation is part of FFA's Goals for Grassroots program, in which Hyundai in association with the A-League clubs will donate $1,000 for every goal the home team scores in the match to the week's designated local club.
The program spans all 30 rounds of the 2010/11 Hyundai A-League season and this Saturday's match will be United's last chance to claim the money for a local club this season, with other teams in the competition allocated the remaining rounds.
United's last Goals for Grassroots round saw Southport Football Club pick up a handy $1,000 despite a nil-all draw against Adelaide United, so even if the Gold Coast don't fire as planned, the Broadbeach ‘Dolphins’ won't go home empty handed.
