Mark Munro: Director of Youth/Junior Coaching

Broadbeach United, one of the Gold Coast's most successful junior and senior clubs, is delighted to have secured Mark Munro as its 2011 Director of Youth and Junior Coaching.

Mark will directly coach the Youth and Colts teams at the club and oversee the rest of the junior coaching, ensuring the latest techniques and curriculum are applied from the youngest ages.

“One of my main objectives as Junior Director of Coaching at Broadbeach is to inspire the coaches and all the players — not just the select elite,” Mark said.

“I don't think you necessarily have to win to enjoy, but to play well is to enjoy.

“At Broadbeach our football coaching is all about junior and youth development.”

Mark's philosophy sits well with the club which has steadfastly put sportsmanship and club spirit ahead of a win-at-any-cost approach. And ironically it has netted amazing success in 2010 with a grand final win at Premiers division; grand final appearances in reserves and Womens and an undefeated grand final win and premiership for Under 13s, a grand final appearance in Under 11s and a preliminary final appearance for Under 12s.

“But more importantly, we had fun doing it and the teams that didn't make grand finals are just as important to us,” club president Michael Doyle said.

Mark Munro successfully completed the AFC ‘C’ Licence in 2010, an internationally-recognised coaching qualification.

It was the first one ever conducted in Queensland that brings Mark up to speed with the new FFA curriculum format.

“The new FFA curriculum is the blueprint for the future and when fully implemented will put all Australian coaches on the same page,” said Mark, at the leading edge of football in Australia.

He also completed a second internationally-recognised coaching certificate in 2008 at the Australian Academy of Sport in Canberra, being the KNVB Youth Certificate, Royal Netherlands Football Association Academy.

But apart from outstanding credentials, Mark understands that football is a game played differently by each player.

“I have very strong views regarding youth development and promotion, and the future of football development must identify the Australia-wide mass exodus of players around the U14 to U18 age group,” Mark said.

“Their needs are different than those of the younger kids and we need to respond with better coaching and a better player development path.”
